160,000 vehicles travel the critical transportation corridor each day and travel times can be nearly an hour at certain times during the day.

Beyond adding highway capacity, the I-77 improvement project brings transformative community investments that Charlotte otherwise has no funded path to deliver.

The project will be responsive to community input by prioritizing local neighborhood needs and enhancing connectivity.

Modernized bridges and overpasses will reconnect communities that have been divided for generations. Safe sidewalks, bike lanes, and direct greenway access will be part of the project. These upgrades will improve the quality of life for communities that have been long impacted by this stretch of I-77.

Our region currently risks losing more than $700 million in funds to support this critical project.

I am writing to ask you to support investments into our community and the proposed improvements to I-77 south of uptown. This project brings transformative community investments that Charlotte otherwise has no funded path to deliver.

As you know, CRTPO will vote on the proposed project for I-77 south of Uptown on September 23, 2026, marking a critical decision for the future of transportation, mobility, and community investment in our region.

Solutions are needed now to keep Charlotte moving forward, and we can’t afford to wait. The project will be responsive to community input by prioritizing local neighborhood needs and enhancing connectivity.

If the project does not proceed, the $600 million in state funds currently committed will be redistributed to other projects across North Carolina with no guarantee they remain in the Charlotte region. In addition, our region would lose more than $100 million in community investment and forfeiture of other allocation funds that would be invested directly into our neighborhoods and communities.
